MODERN FOREIGN LANGUAGES

Modern Foreign Languages

As a school we are wanting the highest of the standards for our young men. We offer French, Arabic and Urdu. There is a strong emphasis on the importance of studying a modern foreign language as this reinforces to the young men that their aspirations are far reaching and worldwide and that studying other languages, cultures, beliefs and practices helps to promote cohesion and tolerance in our society.

The academy currently offers Arabic and French at KS3 and KS4.

Curriculum Overview – Arabic

In studying the conversational mode of Arabic, students are taken through a journey on which they focus on describing their surroundings.

Through gradual progression, students learn about the leisure activities, foods and lifestyles of the native Arabs equipping them with the language and cultural knowledge of the Arabic-speaking lands.

Curriculum Overview – French

The importance of learning an instrumental European language is not lost at Eden Boys’ Manchester. Spoken in countries in Europe as well as North Africa, French remains a major global language. Incorporating background knowledge of the linguistics and culture of France, students are exposed to the creativity of language in exploring broad range of themes.

Curriculum Overview – Urdu

This widely spoken language where our learners experience studying the structural and lexical forms of this beautiful language, develop a range of linguistic skills and enjoy learning a variety of topics in Urdu such as Travel and Tourism, Future Aspiration and Cultural Life. Learners develop the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing and this enables our learners to understand the beautiful aspects of the rich culture.

Assessment

At Key Stage 3, assessments take place at the end of each term.  At Key Stage 4, end of Yr10 mock exams take place in June/July and Yr11 mock exams take place in November.

Enrichment Offer

The Department offers a range of enrichment clubs, leads overseas educational visits and runs regular competitions. Intervention sessions to consolidate prior learning and ensure maximum progress are at the heart of our delivery model.
